Semax + Selank
Quick Reference
Overview
This collection pairs two synthetic neuropeptides developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics in Moscow. Semax is based on a fragment of ACTH (a hormone the brain uses in stress responses) and is studied for its effects on focus and cognition. Selank is based on Tuftsin (a small immune-signalling peptide the body makes naturally) and is studied for anxiolytic (calming) effects in research.
Both peptides have been registered pharmaceuticals in Russia for decades — Semax since 1994, Selank since 2009 — which makes them among the most clinically observed neuropeptides outside mainstream Western pharmacology.
The Components
Neuropeptides
Semax
A short synthetic peptide based on a fragment of ACTH, a hormone the brain uses in stress responses. Registered as a pharmaceutical in Russia since the 1990s. Research focuses on how it affects BDNF and NGF — two growth factors the brain uses to build and maintain neurons — and on cognitive performance.

Neuropeptides
Selank
A synthetic peptide modelled on Tuftsin, a small immune-signalling molecule the body makes naturally. Researchers study it for anti-anxiety effects that appear in the published literature without the drowsiness associated with classical anti-anxiety drugs.

Why This Combination
Semax and Selank are studied at opposite ends of the cognitive-state spectrum. Semax appears to influence BDNF and NGF (two growth factors the brain uses to build and maintain neurons), with published rodent studies examining effects on attention, working memory, and stress response. Its Russian clinical literature is extensive.
Research suggests Selank works mainly through the GABA system — the brain’s main calming signal — without binding to the benzodiazepine receptor. Research suggests this is why it is associated with calming effects in studies without the sedation seen with that drug class. Paired with Semax, researchers study a combination that spans both ends of cognitive state.
Research Notes
The Russian clinical literature on both peptides is substantial, particularly for Semax. The Western literature is smaller but growing, with recent studies examining how these peptides act at the cellular level — both on nerve growth and on immune signalling inside the brain. Neither peptide is approved for therapeutic use in Australia.
How Researchers Use This Collection
Common research readouts include BDNF and NGF measurements in rodent brain tissue (specifically cortex and hippocampus — the regions most involved in memory), standard anxiety-behaviour tests (the elevated plus maze and open-field test), and cognitive task performance such as spatial memory tests.
Storage & Handling
Store at 2–8°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Refrigerate once in solution form.
